SUSAN

SUSAN is a project focused on the development, implementation, and eventual widespread deployment of an underwater device designed to provide early warnings of harmful algal blooms, including red tides, to prevent contaminated fishing and, consequently, avoid the cascade of economic and health issues caused by the sale of such fish. To achieve this, SUSAN employs spectrometry techniques to analyze the color composition of seawater and how it changes when harmful algae begin to proliferate, using visible light and fluorescence to detect the presence of these species and alert communities when a harmful algal bloom event is imminent. Currently, SUSAN is in the testing and experimentation phase, with plans for replication and field installation to follow.
